A 24-year-old taxi driver was yesterday sentenced to 19 years imprisonment for defilement by an Accra Circuit Court.
The accused, Emmanuel Odame, is said to have in the afternoon of October 24, 2012 had unlawful carnal knowledge of the victim aged five.
However, the court presided over Ms Sedina Agbemeva found the accused guilty of the offence.
Delivering the sentence, the trial judge said she took into consideration the time that Odame had been in police custody.
She accordingly handed the accused a 19 year jail term for the offence.
Prior to the sentence, the defence counsel, K. A Owusu-Ansah, prayed the court to deal most leniently with the accused person.
He stated that the accused is a first offender so must be given a light sentence.
The facts of the case as presented by ASP Sarah Acquah are that the victim is a class one pupil who lives at Chorkor, a suburb of Accra with her parents, Samuel Nketia and Agnes Quaicoe.
She said the accused also lives in the same vicinity with the victim and that in the afternoon of the aforementioned date, whilst the victim and her siblings were playing in the vicinity, Odame lured the victim into his room and had sexual intercourse with her.
ASP Acquah further told the court that after the act, the victim went home and disclosed the ordeal she went through in the hands of the accused to Agnes.
She said a report was made to the Dansoman DOVVSU and the victim was medically examined and accused was arrested after investigations.
