Shooting And Explosions In Maiduguri Keep Residents Sleepless

Residents of Maiduguri, Borno State capital, spent a restless night following the shooting and explosions rocking  the city late Tuesday evening.

Scared of having been targeted by Boko Haram insurgents, the locals were hushing calls to understand where the shooting comes from, but in no avail, Premium Times reports.

Only hours later they discovered that it was test-fire carried out within an hour period by the 7th Division of the Nigeria Army on the outskirts of Maiduguri.

One of the residents, who provided his name as Abba Ibrahim, said:

“We thought the Boko Haram gunmen were the ones exchanging fire with soldiers; we were so scared that we had to lay down on the floor all night.”

The journalists later gathered from top military official, who pleaded anonymity, that the terrifying sounds had nothing to do with the attacks:

“No, it was nothing but test firing that was carried out last night.”

Just several days ago the popular bridge linking Biu-DAmboa-Maiduguri federal road was destroyed by suspected Boko Haram members.

Meanwhile the Human Rights Watch organization reported on Monday that at least 2,053 people had been killed by the sect in the first 6 months of the year, with most of the attack launched in Nigeria’s North, and Borno State in particular.
