Fierce Gun Fight Leaves, One Police Officer, Three Robbers Dead

Police officers attached to the Rivers State Command on Monday killed two armed robbers in a foiled operation at the state News Papers Corporation.

DSP Muhammad Ahmad, the command’s spokesperson who made this known to NAN, said one police officer also died during the shootout. He said the media house which is located in Port Harcourt is the publisher of the Nigerian Tide Newspapers.

“Our anti-robbery unit and other detectives are on the trail of other fleeing members of the gang that raided the Tide newspaper office early July 14’’ he said.

The General Manager of the Rivers Newspaper Corporation, Celestine Ogolo, said that the assailants stormed the premises in the early hours of the morning. He, however, expressed surprise why robbers would picket a newspaper house.

“I don’t know what to say; am surprise and it is still a mystery to me what armed robbers will be looking for in a newspaper house; it is still a mystery to me. So, I really don’t know what to say about the incident; six of my staff were brutalised. Their skulls were broken, not even talking about the psychological torture which still manifest’’ Ogolo said.

The manager further disclosed that the injured staff members were receiving medical attention in an undisclosed hospital. He said those who witnessed the incident have not recovered to start night shift.

Ogolo, who condemned the attack and the killing of a police officer said: “We called them (police) for our rescue and he (deceased officer) came here to rescue, only to lose his life.”
