The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Elizabeth Ofosu-Agyare has said that the ministry is taking steps to restructure the course of the Hotel Catering and Tourism Training Institute (HOTCATT) to meet international standards.

The minister said this in her keynote address at the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel, Accra last week during the media launch of the 2014 National Tourism Awards.

She explained that the restructuring exercise will further provide employment opportunities for the majority of the people.

Mrs. Ofosu Adjare stressed that the ministry had provided the basis to develop and enforce standards for areas such as Spas, Golf Courses, entertainment and conference centres.

The minister further indicated that under the ministry’s 15-year tourism development plan, the sector is expected to contribute 5.7 per cent to GDP by 2027.

Mrs. Ofosu-Adjare also mentioned that the ministry had re-launched a domestic tourism project dubbed, ‘Explore Ghana.’

She said ‘Explore Ghana’ is a tourism project aimed at encouraging children, church groups and social clubs, among others, to visit some of the country’s tourism sites, adding that the project would give Ghanaians the opportunity to visit the sites.

The minister, who commended the technical team for the last Tourism Awards, added that the 2014 edition, which would be preceded by regional awards event to be held in the regions between September and October 2014 and the national awards, would come with very attractive packages for winners at the various categories.

The tourism awards is an annual event to among other things reward excellent performance, encourage competition among industry players and enhance the image of the Ghana Tourism Sector.

Players in the sector, organizations, individuals, facilitators of tourism services, among others, are eligible for the awards.

There would be competitive awards (according to their levels) and honourary awards. (Tourism personality of the year)
