Tamale, July 8, GNA – IBIS and other Danish non-governmental organisations, have instituted an Alliance for Change in Education (ACE) project with local collaborators including SONIDA to improve on education in the Gushiegu and Karaga districts.
The public-private-civic partnership was initiated in September 2013 with the aim of prosecuting general development with the focus on education. IBIS is providing the two districts with technical and financial support.
Mr Iddrisu Mohammed, Project Coordinator of SONIDA, in a statement issued in Tamale and copied to Ghana News Agency appealed to stakeholders in the beneficiary districts to commit themselves to the success of the project.
He said education is the bedrock of all developmental interventions, hence the need for stakeholders to support development partners to improve its pursuit.
Mr Mohammed said the ACE project facilitated the enrollment of a total of 10,806 children in 56 wing schools.
He said authorities in the two districts pledged to support the schools to consolidate the investment.
This, was supposed to be done by supporting the payment of allowances of volunteer teachers.
He however, expressed dissatisfaction about the failure of the districts to honour their pledge.
Mr Mohammed noted that the Karaga District Assembly had received two tranches of the District Assembly Common Fund, since the pledge was made.
A letter signed by Mr Abdulai Mohammed, Gushiegu Deputy Coordinating Director underscored the importance of the ACE project and pledged to absorb the allowances and school fees of community teachers in the district.
The letter written on the April 17, 2013 said: ’75 community teachers are currently undergoing training at the Bagabaga College of Education in Tamale under the auspices of the ACE project.
However, the Assembly is aware that the completion date of these teachers goes beyond the official closing date of the project in September 2013.
The Assembly had put itself in the position to continue paying the fees and allowances of the teachers after the end of the ACE project until they complete the course.
Provision of GH¢ 30,000 had been earmarked for teacher sponsorship and out of this GH¢18,000 would be used to pay allowances and fees of 75 community teachers.
Mr Alhassan Fuseini, Gushiegu District Chief Executive told the GNA that the Assembly is committed to improve education in the area and that his outfit had paid two months allowances to the community teachers.
