Akwa-Ibom:Youths Punish ExxonMobil Over Oil Spillage

The  youths in Ibeno local government of Akwa Ibom State has taken law into their hands by blocking the main gates to multinational oil firm,ExxonMobil’s Quo Iboe Terminal, QIT, due to unfulfilled promises of the firm to the community over damaged properties.

The youths shut down the operations of the firm over insistently repetitive oil spills and unfulfilled promises made to the communities. The youths, who vowed not to leave the area until the company carries out proper remediation on the environment and also fulfilled some of the promises made during previous oil spills.

According to  the company’s spokesperson,Mr. Akaninyene Esiere,the company the company has however resisted in space the source of the spill and has notified relevant stakeholders of the spillage, which wasted approximately 12 barrels of oil. Mr Esiere also made it known that the firm has activated its emergency response system and that all relevant regulatory authorities and community leaders have been notified about the development.

Mr David Okon, the Secretary, Youth Presidents Forum and President of Iwuokpom Community Youth, where ExxonMobil is situated in the state, said the recent spill occurred on Thursday when thunder struck the QIT tank farm and one of the crude oil-laden tanks went up in flames.

It would be recalled that just recently,the people of Otonyatsere community in Sapele Local Government Area of Delta State, also had the same issue with Seplat Petroleum Development Company Limited.
