The Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jnr expressed his disgust at the way the print media has reported the decision by the government to distribute the free sanitary pads.
He congratulated the decision taken by government to distribute free sanitary pads to school girls in deprived areas of the country saying he is in full support of the decision.
He said this on Adom FMs ‘Dwaso Nsem’ programme when he was asked about his thoughts on government’s decision to distribute free sanitary pads to school girls in deprived areas in the country.
The Ministry of Education is set to receive funds from a World Bank loan meant to support the provision of equipment and infrastructre for schools. Part of the $156 million World Bank facility will support the construction of Senior High Schools in the country and out of the money an amount of 15 million dollars will go into scholarship for over ten thousand students to pursue senior high education.
But the component meant for the provision of free sanitary pads has sparked negative public reaction. A sample of opinions on social media and radio indicate, using loans to buy sanitary pads is not right
Kwesi Pratt is not happy with the way the media has handled the issue because it focused only on the sanitary pads which is only a subset of a wider initiative for education.
He has called on Ghanaians especially the media to be constructive in their political discussions and be honest about it.
Before anything is put in the public domain the media must ensure that they have their facts rights in order that they do not mislead the public, he added.
‘I am a critic of the government but I also think that if the government is doing something good then it should be supported’.
He is convinced that the provision of the sanitary pads will make school girls feel more comfortable and confident when they go to school.
He also criticized some the members of the Minority in parliament for taking the situation out of context.
The Managing Editor also expressed shock at the females who instead of supporting the decision have called for the programme to be scraped.
“We must endeavor to be honest with our politics everything has been politicized we should not do that to ourselves. There are more pressing issues which need to be addressed not this’.
He further stated that he was happy the government was making moves to fulfill promises it made in its 2012 manifesto.
