Tullow Gives Black Stars GH100,000

Tullow Ghana Limited, operators of the Jubilee field, has presented an amount of GH¢ 100,000 to Ghana’s national football team, the Black Stars, to support their campaign at the world’s biggest football fiesta in Brazil.

The presentation was in demonstration of the company’s commitment to “creating shared prosperity” for the socio-economic development of the country. It also forms part of the company’s social investment programmes which are geared towards the wellbeing of the communities in which it operates. The donation was received on behalf of the team by the Minister of Youth and Sports.

Charles Darku, General Manager of Tullow Ghana said: “as a company, Tullow Ghana shares in the passion of the nation, football; and so when the Black Stars are participating in a competition at this high level we believe it is only right to support them to propel them to victory”. Ahead of the World Cup, Tullow Ghana partnered Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) to sponsor the technical team of the Black Stars on a learning tour to the United Kingdom.

The team, comprising the Head Coach Kwasi Appiah, his deputy, Maxwell Konadu, goalkeepers’ coach, team doctor and video analyst interacted with and shared ideas with the League Managers Association, including Howard Wilkinson (LMA Chairman), Steve McClaren (former England Manager), Alex McLeish and Graham Taylor and many other leading managers and coaches.

Coach Kwasi Appiah and his team also attended a number of English Premier League matches, a coaching course and other football related educational master classes. In addition, Tullow Ghana has also sponsored community viewing centres in selected communities in the six coastal districts in the Western Region to ensure that its host communities share in the World Cup experience whilst supporting the Black Stars.

The mobile viewing centres will travel through over 20 centrally located communities and bring the “stadium feeling” to the people. The selected communities include Butre, Busua, Lower and Upper Axim, Ahobre, Ankobra Abuesi and Ngyiresia.
In support of the development of football in general, Tullow Ghana launched a partnership agreement with the Right to Dream Academy located at Akrade in the Eastern Region in March this year to promote the nurturing and development of the youth through sports.

The three year partnership is to provide support for the Academy’s vision of offering talented underprivileged children the opportunity to fulfil their true potential in football, academics and character development. The training and professional development of the beneficiaries is expected to empower them to make a positive impact on their communities and country.
