Bui spends $3m on Golf Park as Ghana sleeps in darkness -Minority

At a time when the nation is rationing power due to low investment in the power sector, the Bui Power Authority is alleged to be spending a whopping amount of $3 million on a Golf park and a recreational centre for staff of the Authority.

The Minority in Parliament who made the allegation, said the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) is also spending $63,000 a month as rent for offices at the plush East Legon residential area.

The Minority spokesperson on Finance, Anthony Akoto Osei made the revelations at a press conference held at the premises of the Parliament House, Thursday.

Joy FM’s Parliamentary correspondent Elton John Brobbey reported Akoto Osei as saying that the lavish spending by Bui was contained in documents presented to Parliament by the Bui Power Authority through the Finance Minister.

According to the Spokesperson on Finance, the Minority was not fully abreast with how the Bui Authority spent an amount of 100 million dollars approved by the House for investment in the Authority.

The Minority was not particularly impressed with how an amount of $57 million from the $100 million was used.

Upon further probe by the Minority, the Finance Minister brought details of the expenditure to Parliament, which contained, among other things, how the Bui Power Authority lavishly spent on a Golf course and a recreational centre.

MP for Effutu Alexander Afenyo Markins in an interview with John Brobbey after  the press conference said he finds it difficult to understand how the two institutions would misappropriate such huge sums in an era where there is power rationing.

Even more baffling, the MP noted was the brazen disregard to calls on the government by the opposition and even the IMF to spend within their means.

He said for a Bui Power Authority which is not even operating at full capacity to spend millions of dollars on Golf course and a recreational centre is unacceptable.

When challenged to provide details and evidence of the allegations made against the NPA, the Effutu MP said the evidence was incontrovertible and challenged the NPA to deny.

But the Bui Power Authority has vehemently denied the claim.

An Assistant Communications Officer at Bui, Mawuli Kojovia described the allegation by the Minority MPs as “scandalous” and should not be taken seriously.

He said the Authority has no such thing as a Golf Course and does not have any immediate plans to build one.

The PRO of the NPA, Yaro Kasambata on his part said he cannot confirm the allegations by the minority.
