MMT Smashes Motor Rider

Speaking to DAILY GUIDE, an eyewitness who gave his name as C K Nuworkpor, said the accident happened in the afternoon. He said the motor rider, who was believed to be living in Togo based on the registration number of his bike – TG 0302-VI – was moving from the Aflao border towards Denu – both in the Ketu South Municipality.

On reaching the Viepe area, he attempted to overtake the bus and jumped off the motorbike in an effort to save his life. Unfortunately for him, Mr. Nuworkpor intimated, the rider landed on the other lane just when the Metro Mass bus, which was travelling from Denu towards Aflao, had reached the spot.

Due to the closeness of the vehicle to the victim, the bus inevitably ran over the head, shattering it beyond recognition, despite the helmet he was wearing.

Inspector Juliet Ayitey of the Keta Divisional Motor Transport and Traffic Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, confirmed the accident but said the motor rider was knocked down by a Funyung mini bus with registration number, GN 1504 – 09 before he fell into the lane of the Metro Mass bus.

She also added that the bus, with registration number GS 3265 – 12, was from Aflao to Denu, while the motorbike and the mini bus were from Denu and heading towards Aflao.

She said the body of the victim had been deposited at the St Anthony’s Hospital at Dzodze.

She could not give further details as she was awaiting a full report from the Aflao Police Station. The Station Master at the Volta Regional MTTD, Chief Inspector Francis Gbedze, expressed worry over the behaviour of commercial motorbike (popularly known as Okada) riders and assured that the MTTD would effectively deal with them.
