6 Killed In Gory Crash

The accident occurred at about 11:30 am near Konongo-Odumasi, DSP Charles Ahiamale, Ashanti Regional Deputy Commander of the Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) of the Ghana Police Service, indicated.

According to him, it took rescuers – made up of fire and police officers – close to an hour to get all the passengers out of the Hyundai bus with registration number AS 5900 – 14 that was traveling from Kumasi to Konongo.

The police chief told DAILY GUIDE that five of the victims died on the spot, while one person died at the Konongo Government Hospital.

DSP Ahiamale added that the identities of the deceased persons remained unknown to the police, disclosing that seven other passengers who sustained various degrees of injury were taken to the Konongo Government Hospital and the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital in Kumasi.

He stated that four of the injured were in a critical condition at the time they were being transported to the hospital.

DSP Charles Ahiamale said the cause of the fatal accident was not yet clear to the police, but some local residents told DAILY GUIDE that the bus veered into the lane of the truck, while climbing the hilly stretch of the road towards Konongo.

‘It happened so fast, before anybody could think of it. The bus ran into the truck,’ Peter Bonsu, a resident, told this paper.

According to him, two of the passengers were thrown out of the bus, while others were trapped inside with broken limbs and crushed heads.

He disclosed that while firefighters worked to free those who got stuck in the bus, police officers and other rescuers helped to transport the wounded people to the hospital.

He identified the driver of the Hyundai bus as Kwaku Dankwa, who was said to be a resident of Konongo.
