The Auditor General’s Report on Police accommodation has revealed the impoverish nature of housing including the use of pan latrines by some police officers within barracks.
At the Labadi barracks, there are 24 pan latrines which is supposed to serve 77 men and their families.
Eight of the pans have been converted to water closets which served 16 policemen and their families. The remaining 61 policemen are left to use public toilets.
The report reveals that after spending 1.6 million Ghana cedis to provide housing for 20,000 police officers, only 8,000 of them have so far benefited from the project.
The STX housing project touted by government to provide 30,000 housing units for security agencies was abandoned after a boardroom controversy in 2012.
The report also revealed that since June, 2013, 17 out of 38 outstanding housing projects have been completed.
11 were ongoing and 10 deemed for termination due to inadequate funds.
One of the uncompleted buildings is a three storey project at Yendi which the police administration says has stalled because it has been starved of funding from the Finance Ministry .
Despite an order issued by the auditors that no new projects be commenced until outstanding ones are completed, the police are building new houses for new recruits and officers in Koforidua and Ho.
