Speaking with Vanguard, a competent palace source said it is tradition that has survived thousands of years,  which also predates the conquest of Fulani Jihadist in 1804, adding that successful past emirs also passed through the compulsory ritual.

The source said, “it is a living tradition in the emirate and was brought about by Habre rulers before the whole process was Islamized by the founder of modern Kano kingdom, Ibrahim Dabo, the 2nd Fulani Emir of Kano.”

According to the source, the process would see the emir locked up in the room known as Dakin Duhu (dark room) without access to anyone.

“The new emir is expected to go into solitary confinement  for three days in a room that was last opened to an emir 52 years ago – though his needs would be provided, and he is expected to engage in glorification of the Almighty Allah while in the dark room,” the source disclosed.

He explained that after the confinement, the new Emir is expected to come out on the third day through a new gate, and head straight to the room of queen mother located within the southern axis of the century old palace.

However, a prince who pleaded anonymity disclosed that Sanusi is too westernized to go through such rigour, adding that he doubted the tradition was compulsory.

It is not compulsory for Sanusi because the most important thing was recognition and he has gotten that already,” the Prince said.

It would be recalled that right after Lamido Sanusi’s proclamation as the new emir there were riots in Kano state which led to the monarch’s palace in the city being cordoned off by security agents. The security operatives had insisted that their move was aimed at maintaining law and order and also keeping trouble makers who were angry by the decision to install Sanusi on the throne, away.

The Governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, however, accused President Jonathan of plotting to liquidate him While also claiming that the security agents had acted on the orders of the president who intended to arrest Lamido Sanusi.
