Dimuth Karunaratne keeps cool head

England put themselves in a commanding position when they declared at 575-9 before Sri Lanka ended day two at 140-1 on Friday.

Sri Lanka head into the third day 435 runs adrift but Karunaratne, who was the only Sri Lankan batsman to lose his wicket, said his team remain in the contest thanks to unbeaten pair Kaushal Silva (62) and Kumar Sangakkara (32), who combined for 86 runs to help the tourists finish strongly.

“The wicket is, I think, it is a flat wicket after the first inning,” Karunaratne said.

“I think Kaushal and Kumar batted really well, so I think they can go through tomorrow as well.

“I think 360 (runs) is a gettable score and we can avoid the follow-on as well.

Karunaratne added: “Sanga and Mahela (Jayawardene), they are the most experienced guys in the team.

“I think Sanga scored 100 last year as well, so I think he has the confidence to do it and Mahela as well has scored 200s at Lord’s.

“So I think both of them will play a good game in the Lord’s Test.”
