The National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has taken a strong exception to the rising incidence of indiscipline among Muslim youth in the Zongo communities.

His reaction follows the recent incident in which a policeman from the Nima MTTU was severely assaulted by three youth from the area where he was assigned traffic control duties by his superior.

Following the arrest of the suspects, the Chief Imam was contacted to intervene in the matter to which he declined with the warning, ‘Discipline is a bedrock of Islam and besides I would not have reached where I am today but for this virtue. Those who think they can breach the law and expect me to go and plead on their behalf have got it all wrong because I won’t do that. Encouraging such breaches in society is not in line with the tenets of Islam.’

The Islamic cleric had already sent word to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to ask his personnel to deal decisively with whosoever breaches the law because as he put it, ‘No society can progress without discipline and where there is breach of law and order.’

Islamic kingdoms of yore, he recalled, had set of laws breaches of which attracted sanctions, he said, adding, ‘I as the National Chief Imam I am not above the law and so those who respect me and call themselves Muslims must respect the laws of the land because this is in conformity with Islam.’

Muslim youth especially from the Zongo communities are noted for unruly behaviour especially when they are on the way for burials.

The Chief Imam, it would be recalled, expressed aversion to the conduct of Muslim youth riding dangerously and endangering the lives of other road users when they are on their way for burials.

The Nima Police have processed for court Omar Mas Awudu, 38-year-old station master at Nima, Adam Wudu, 28, and Abubarkar Wudu, 23 for allegedly assaulting Corporal George Darko with the Nima MTTU.

The policeman was beaten by the angry youth because he objected to their parking in the middle of the road.

The victim sustained injuries in the face, hands and other parts of the body.
