Why These 18 Soldiers Are In Trouble

Following the mutiny by some soldiers of 7 Division, Nigerian Army, Maiduguri, Borno State on May 14 2014 against the General Officer Commanding (GOC), Major General Abubakar Mohammed at 7 Division, 18 soldiers have reportedly been arrested.

It would be recalled that after the attack the Nigerian Army promised to carry out proper investigation bringing all those responsible to books.

Meanwhile the 18 soldiers were arrested, disarmed after an investigations into the cause of the alleged mutity at Maimalari Cantonment were carried out and the investigating team set up by the Defence Headquarters in Abuja found them culpable of the of­fence and were flown to Abuja,where they are currently being detained.

Sources said the soldiers who are still being interrogated, would soon appear before a General Court Martial to be set by the Army authorities in Abuja and they would be charged with alleged mutiny, indiscipline, insubordi­nation, disobedience to standing orders among other offences, as stipulated in the Armed Forces Act.

It was reported that the cause of the mutiny by the angry Soldiers on May 14 was in connection with the killing of 10 of their colleagues, who were ambushed and killed by Boko Haram insurgents in one of the villages in the state, inadequate provision of weapons and non-timely payment of allowances.

Meanwhile after the attack, the General Of­ficer Commanding (GOC), Major General Abubakar Mohammed who luckily escaped death was immediately redeployed and replaced by Brigadier General Mahmid Yakubu Ibrahim.
