Ugly scenes: Riot breaks in Sao Paulo hours before WC kicks off

The 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil is a few hours away. But not everybody in the country is happy about the greatest football show on earth coming to town.

Ugly scenes broke out in Sao Paulo, a few miles away from the stadium which will host the opening game between Brazil and Croatia.

The protest which has gone on for some time now reached a boiling point on Thursday afternoon as CNN’s Sao Paulo producer Barbara Arvanitidis suffered a broken arm.

The protesters who were demonstrating against the money spent by the government on the 2014 FIFA World Cup while many in Brazil still live in poverty were trying on Thursday to cut off a key avenue leading to the Corinthians Arena.

Brazilian police did their best to disperse the demonstrators of about 200 using fired noise bombs in the process.

Piers Scholfield of BBC reports at least two injured journalists as riot is expected to grow before Brazil take on Croatia at 5pm Brazil local time [8pm Ghana time].
