A new award scheme christened ‘Over To You Sports Broadcast Excellence Award’ has been launched at the Mascot Hotel in Accra.

The scheme, named after astute broadcaster, Joe Lartey, seeks to reward excellence in sports broadcasting in the country.

Put together by Journalists and Sportsmen of Association of Ghana (JOSAG), the launch coincided with the 87 th birthday of the ace broadcaster held some few days ago.

The birthday celebrant bemoaned the dwindling standards in broadcasting and charged the current breed of sports broadcasters to go the extra mile in their discharge of duties.

‘The standards are falling, and that is what has stirred the Award Committee to institute this scheme to reward excellence in broadcasting,’ said Lartey.

His excellence in broadcasting made his name a household one and a reference point in broadcasting which had carved the phrase ‘Over to you Joe Lartey’.

Past and current generation of broadcasters as well as soccer administrators in a documentary praised the broadcast icon for his proficiency and brilliance.

In their various interviews, they lauded the broadcaster’s ability to give vivid description of actions in matches to listeners.

A special Award, ‘Nii Okasafuo Award’, the highest award of eloquence was presented to him by the organisers for his meritorious service. He practised in Nigeria for over a decade   before returning home.  He has also taught in many media institutions and platforms as a resource person.

The maiden awards ceremony would be an annual event to celebrate excellence in sports broadcasting.
