33 Cantonments prostitutes fined GH¢ 720 each


The 33 suspected commercial sex workers, including two men, who were arrested by the Cantonments police in Accra for allegedly engaging in prostitution, have been convicted by an Accra magistrate court.

The suspects were fined an amount of GH¢720 each and are supposed to sign a bond to be of good t behaviour for six months.

Failure to pay the fine, they would serve six months in prison in hard labour.

If any of them defaults regarding the bond and continues with the trade, that person will be sentenced to one year imprisonment term, according to the court.

Chief Superintendent Idi Seidu, who disclosed the outcome of the court to DAILY GUIDE yesterday, said only 16 of the suspected prostitutes met the court requirements.

“Those who were unable to meet the court conditions will be sent to Nsawam Prisons”, according to the Commander.

It would be recalled that 33 suspected prostitutes, including two men, were apprehended by the cantonments police in a swoop Sunday night.

A woman who was five months pregnant was said to be part of the prostitutes.

The suspects, from the ages of 18 to 40 years, were apprehended around the Togo and Italian Embassies at Cantonments, Dankwa Circle and its environs.

They were charged with soliciting for immoral purpose and were put before the Osu Magistrate court on Monday.         . «

Chief Superintendent Idi Seidu earlier told the media that the exercise began on Sunday at about 11:00 pm and ended around 2:00 am Monday.

The Cantonments police received several complaints from residents about the activities of the purported prostitutes, who were said to be harassing some of them at night.

The prostitutes, according to reports, always made excessive noise and fought in those areas.
