Wiesberger sneaks into US Open

The Austrian narrowly missed out on winning the Lyoness Open in a play-off with Mikael Lundberg on home soil on Sunday, leaving him sweating on a place in just his fourth major championship.

However, the updated rankings saw Wiesberger climb to 60th on Monday and narrowly book his place at the Pinehurst tournament.

“I”m just thrilled to be going to Pinehurst this week and playing in my first US Open,” he is quoted as saying by the European Tour website.

“It was very disappointing to miss out on the Lyoness Open title over the weekend, especially in front of my home fans, but this goes some way in making me feel a little better.

“Of course, I have played in The Open Championship and the US PGA Championship, but this will be my first US Open and it makes me very proud to be the first Austrian to play in such a huge event.

“Hopefully I can bring some of the good form I showed last week into this week and be at my best.”

Elsewhere in the rankings, Lundberg climbs from 872 to 306, while Ben Crane leaps 166 places to 101st after victory in the St Jude Classic.

The top 28 remained unchanged ahead of the second major of the year, which gets under way on Thursday.
