The Lady Pharmacists Associationof Ghana (LAPAG) has launched its 20th anniversary celebration on the theme ‘LAPAG – 20 Years of Science oriented health care delivery’ in Accra.
The launch of the anniversary was preceded by a health outreach programme across the country with the aim of promoting good health, rational use of drug and curbing the menace of drug abuse among the youth.
The Lady Pharmacists Association of Ghana (LAPAG) is an interest group of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana and a Non-profit, Civil Society Organization (CSO) dedicated to improving the health, human welfare and educational attainment for women and the youth in Ghana.
Speaking at the launch, Yvonne Yirenkywaa, president of LAPAG said the aim of the association was to improving the health, human welfare and educational attainment for women and the youth in the country.
‘It is the hope of the association that reaching the women and young people we will reach the family and the society at large’.
According to her, over the years LAPAG has undertaken several health campaigns and currently there is an on – going public campaign to promote healthy practices and actions, responsible use of medicines and also curbing the menace of substance of abuse.
‘We have cervical and breast cancer education programmes as well as educational programmes on teenage pregnancy and reproductive health’ she added.
The president stated that LAPAG has recently joined forces with the National Medical Outreach programmme on outreaches across the nation to prisons and underprivileged in society.
She said the association has also made donations to institutions such as the Dzorwulu Special School, the New Horizon School, Osu and Kumasi children homes and the Otumfuo Educational Found.
The Minister of Health, Sherry Ayitey in a statement read on her behalf thanked LAPAG for improving the health of women and the young ones in the country.
Sherry Ayitey was worried about the growing phenomenon where pharmacies are left in the hands of non – professionals to dispense medication without the appropriate counseling.
To this, she urged LAPAG to champion education in schools, churches and mosques to ensure that this developmental phenomenon is curtailed.
Activities marking the 20th anniversary celebration included health outreaches, health walk and donations to some institutions in the country.
