The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) made this known in a statement issued to newsmen in Abuja.

According to the statement, the sect members were on their way to attack selected communities, when they were ambushed by soldiers along Bilta, Borno State, upon receiving intelligence report on the Islamist intention.

Olukolade said the attack was launched at about 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, as the terrorists trooped out of the forest to embark on their mission.

The DHQ spokesman revealed that four soldiers sustained bullet wounds during the assault.

“More than 50 terrorists died in the fierce encounter that ensued, while 30 rifles, 36 hand grenades, 7 machine guns and 11rocket propelled grenade tubes were captured by the troops” Olukolade said. “Also recovered from the terrorists are 3,500 rounds of ammunition, six smoke grenade canisters, locally fabricated guns and four vehicles used by the terrorists in the foiled attack”.

He said the four soldiers that sustained injuries in the operation have been taken to a secure military medical facility for medical attention.

Olukolade said that the military had embarked on cordon and search in the area in order to fish out the wounded sect members.

Meanwhile, this attack is coming after the Nigerian army successfully repelled the radical Islamist sect members in a heavy gunfight in the early hours of Thursday, June 5, 2014, when the terrorist launched an attack on Madagali town, Adamawa State.
