Korle-Bu board members accused of increasing allowance by 200%

The senior staff of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital have accused their Board of looting hospital funds after they allegedly increased sitting allowances to almost Gh¢42,000 per month – further deepening claims of mismanagement

A document sited by Joy News shows the current board members have increased their allowances by 200% from Gh¢500 to Gh¢2,000 per sitting.

This comes a few days after the senior staff also accused the hospital of buying nine VW Passats for its directors using internally generated funds. The Health Ministry has since cancelled the acquisition of the cars.

Senior Staff Association has been breathing down the neck of the hospital’s management after forwarding a litany of accusations to President John Mahama.

Charles Ofei-Palm at a staff meeting last Thursday, argued the payments demonstrated Korle-Bu’s management lacks a sense of direction.

The workers are demanding that the finance minister stop these payments whilst the president considers their petition to him. 

Korle Bu Teaching Hospital  is a 90-year old colonial facility said to be the largest in West Africa. The hospital has been a training ground for surgeons from several African countries.

But in recent times it has attracted negative publicity. The controversy over how the management is misusing the hospital’s massive internally generate funds, has resurrected public complaints about the quality of healthcare services.
