Community Service Award For Tertiary Students

Students from three tertiary institutions are expected to present their innovative ideas to solve some of the critical social issues facing the youth at the Grand Finale of the Community Service Awards.

The event will take place on 13 June, 2014 at the British Council Auditorium in Accra between the hours of 12:00pm and 3:00pm.

The Community Service Award was launched in March 2014 by Osei-Kusi Foundation and Selfless 4Africa Inc. The Award scheme is aimed at cultivating a spirit of volunteerism and community service among young people. The scheme also seeks to encourage the youth to be selfless, innovative and commit themselves to supporting people living in deprived communities.

This year, the Award scheme received 20 applications from students from ten tertiary institutions including University of Ghana, University of Professional Studies, University College of Management Studies, Catholic University College, University of Development Studies-WA Campus, University of Energy and Natural Resources, Accra Polytechnic and Kwame Nkrumah University Science and Technology

Out of the applications received, Team Kwame Nkrumah University Science and Technology (e-waste management project), Team University of Ghana (library renovation project) and team Catholic University College (bakery for youth at Nankitiwa) have been shortlisted to present at the Grand Finale and awards ceremony. A winner will be chosen at the ceremony by a panel of distinguished judges. The prize for the winning team is GH₵ 9,000 (GH₵6,500 to implement the community project and GH₵ 2,500 for participants of the winning team).

The winning team’s project will be monitored and evaluated by Osei-Kusi Foundation.

The event is expected to be attended by Hon. Minister of Education, Hon. Minister of Local Government, Mr. James Asare-Adjei: President of Association of Ghana Industries, captains of industries, Vice-Chancellors and staff of tertiary institutions, civil society organizations, members of the diplomatic corps, students and youth groups, the media and local and international development organizations.

In the long term, the Foundation seeks to make the Awards scheme an annual event and to use it as a platform to drive volunteerism, innovation and community service among students and the youth at large. The platform will also be used to honour corporate bodies that partner youth groups and students to innovatively solve social problems facing the country.
