Tears Flow For Cop Rider

Police personnel of the Northern Regional Police Command paid their last respects to their departed colleague in a grand style at the Tamale Jubilee Park in a brief ceremony.

Many people were seen wailing uncontrollably as tributes were said by his superiors, colleagues and sympathizers, who converged on the venue.

The widow of the deceased, Comfort Osei-Tutu told DAILY GUIDE that she was yet to come to terms with the untimely death of her husband, who was illustrious.

According to her, Corporal Osei-Tutu never shirked his responsibilities as a husband.

Recounting her last moments with the deceased, she told the paper that on the morning of the fateful day, her husband informed her about an official assignment.

He said the deceased promised to return home by midday to check on how she was recuperating in view of the fact she had been discharged from hospital a day earlier.

Few hours later, she said she started receiving several phone calls from wives of other policemen, who only claimed to checking up on her.

She said she sensed danger and called her husband but his three phones were all switched off, adding that a number of women rushed to their home to enquire about her health.

Madam Comfort indicated that she became alarmed and decided to buy call credits from a vendor and while on her way, she overheard a group of persons discussing the horrific death of someone.

Moments later, she was informed about the intended visit of the Northern Regional Police Commander, DCOP Ken Yeboah to her house to discuss certain pertinent issues.

She said it dawned on her that something bad had happened to his husband, which was duly confirmed by DCOP Ken Yeboah upon arrival.

Madam Comfort described his hubby as irreplaceable and wondered if their only son would ever get that fatherly love.

She expressed gratitude to the Northern Regional Police Command and the Minister of Trade and Industry Haruna Iddrisu for the support extended to her during the trying times.

It would be recalled that a week ago, a tipper truck ran into the convoy of Charles Xavier-Luc Duval, GCSK, Vice Prime Minister, Minister of Finance and Economic Development of the Republic of Mauritius on the Tamale Airport road, killing the police dispatch rider instantly.

Occupants of other vehicles in the convoy, including the Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of Trade and Industry, Haruna Iddrisu and his entourage escaped unhurt.

The Prime Minister was leading a high-level business delegation on a three-day state visit to Ghana to the Northern Region to consolidate efforts in setting up a sugar factory at Dipale in the Savelugu-Nanton District.

He was on his way back to Tamale from Savelugu after meeting the various stakeholders at the African Dream Hotel about two kilometres to the city when the incident happened.

The tipper truck was reported to have veered off its lane and ran into the opposite lane, killing Corporal Moses Osei-Tutu of the Motor Traffic and Transport Division (MMTD) of the Ghana Police Service (GPS).

According to eyewitnesses, the tipper truck was believed to have had a brake failure while descending from a hill and nearly crashed into a motorcade transporting market women to a nearby village, but the driver attempted moving into the opposite lane when he spotted the convoy of the Prime Minister approaching.

The driver lost control and rammed the motorbike which immediately caught fire causing fire in the tipper truck which was also burnt beyond recognition.

The dispatch rider was immediately rescued and rushed to the Tamale Teaching Hospital together with the driver of the truck but he was pronounced dead on arrival, throwing the entire Northern Regional Police Command into a state of mourning.
