Nana Akufo-Addo bowing to John Agyekum Kufuor recently
The 2012 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has taken time to respond to spurious allegations against him.
The latest is that he has rebutted having any strained relationship with former President John Agyekum Kufuor, under whom he (Nana) served as Attorney General and later Minister of Foreign Affairs.
This follows media reports that there is bad blood between the two top political personalities.
It was also alleged that President Kufuor did not support his (Nana Addo’s) presidential bids in 2008 and 2012, and is also not in support of his decision to lead the party for the 2016 general elections, amongst other issues.
But Nana Addo insists that ‘These allegations, pointing to an unhealthy relationship between President Kufuor and myself, are false.’
‘I am compelled to inform the public that President Kufuor and I remain in regular communication with each other, and I make it a point to visit him every week’, he disclosed, emphasizing that ‘Such actions cannot be suggestive of a fractured relationship between two colleagues.’
He explained that, ‘In 2008, President Kufuor, supported fully my bid to become President of our country and gave me his unstinting assistance.’
Likewise, in 2012, he indicated that ‘The support I received from him was unflinching, as it was during the entire course of the now famous election petition.’
He continued, ‘Never has there been a point in time where our former President has done anything detrimental to me, as a person, or to the party with me as its presidential candidate’, he emphasized.
These false allegations, he said did not bode well for the NPP’s internal cohesion as a party and pleaded with all members who had been fed with these untruths to desist from propagating them any further.
This, he said, was in view of the fact that ‘such unguarded pronouncements could give our opponents comfort from their non-performance.’
As far as the 2016 election is concerned, he said President Kufuor had made it clear to all and sundry that he does not support any particular candidate and would work to help whoever emerges from the presidential primary as the party’s candidate.
Nana Addo has therefore urged NPP faithful not to be side-tracked by such falsehoods, but remain focused, bearing in mind that the people of Ghana are looking up to the party to make the necessary arrangements that would give them the confidence to trust the NPP with the mandate to serve them once again.
