The weak bridge
PEOPLE who ply on the main Ahodwo to Kaase road in Kumasi are living in great danger, DAILY GUIDE has discovered.
The wooden-made bridge on the road is in a very weak state, thereby putting the lives of the users of the busy road at a peril.
Residents in the area have continuously appealed to the authorities concerned to come to their aid but there hasn’t been any response yet.
Kwadwo Marfo, a broadcast journalist at Kapital Radio in Kumasi, has on several occasions used his platform to call for the bridge to be reconstructed, but this also has not yielded any fruit.
Instead of initiating rapid mechanisms to save imminent calamity from occurring on the bridge, the city authorities are doing something different.
They have rather decided to erect a warning sign post, telling users of the bridge about the danger that the bridge poses to their lives.
The sign post has been placed at the place for some months now, but authorities concerned have so far failed to do something about the situation.
Interestingly, Kaase is the hub of industries in Kumasi so the big vehicles and trucks whose weights exceed fine tones ply the road all the time.
Although the bridge is weak and could collapse, nobody seems to care about the situation.
When the paper visited the bridge site on Thursday afternoon, trucks laden with timber were seen moving on the bridge.
Some of the drivers who spoke with the DAILY GUIDE said, ‘Although we are aware of the danger of driving on the weak bridge, we do not have any other alternative route and we are always compelled to risk our lives and drive on the weak bridge.’
