Angry NDC Chase Nana Oye

Barring any last minute hitches, DAILY GUIDE learnt, Nana Oye would face the executives tomorrow over alleged insults she heaped on a deputy minister.

The Minister is expected to be quizzed about her alleged tantrums directed at her deputy, who doubles as Member of Parliament (MP) for Ledzokuku, Benita Sena Okity-Duah, on Saturday, May 24, 2014.

The Gender Minister, who is the wife of President Mahama’s lawyer, Tony Lithur, is said not to be on talking terms with her two deputies – Sena and Rachel Appoh – and was alleged to have hurled unprintable insults at Sena during the registration of the aged and disabled persons in her (Sena’s) constituency for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) on Saturday, May 24, 2014.

The alleged misconduct of the Minister, DAILY GUIDE gathered, took centre stage of a recent meeting of the Greater Regional of the NDC, leading to the holding of a press conference by the regional executives, but in the last minute, the Regional Chairman, Kobina Ade Coker, who presided over the meeting, ditched the group by distancing himself from the press conference.

Since the attack on Sena Okity-Duah, her constituents have been restless, calling on the President to call the Minister to order.

Within the last one week, two press confabs had been held by different groups to condemn the action of the Gender Minister.

‘Stop Nana Oye’
At a news conference in Accra last week in protest against her purported action, a group of NDC branch executives and youth from various branches in the Ledzokuku constituency in Teshie urged President Mahama to check Nana Oye.

‘We humbly appeal to President Mahama to call Nana Oye to order. Her gross disrespect for her deputies and the NDC must cease now. Where was Nana Oye when we were campaigning in 2012 anyway?’

The statement, jointly signed by Kassim Issah and Naomi Tsikpo, Branch Secretary and Branch Youth Organizer respectively, blamed Nana Oye for single-handedly scheming to prevent the constituency from benefiting from the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme.

‘We have come to know through your reportage and our own investigations that Nana Oye has personally refused to enroll the Ledzokuku constituency on the LEAP programme, despite the numerous appeals to her, for reasons best known to herWe take strong exception to that act of wickedness being perpetrated against the good people of Teshie. We believe that like all poor communities across Ghana, Teshie needs to be enrolled on the LEAP programme as a matter of great importance’.

The statement warned that they would resist any attempt by Nana Oye Lithur to frustrate and make the MP unpopular.

Ade Coker Chickens Out
However, Antony Nukpenu, acting Greater Accra Regional Organizer of the party, confirming the incident on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem programme on Friday, said ‘this is not the first time such an incident has happened.

‘It has happened in other constituencies, but I think this was so extreme and there is so much agitation,’ he said, insisting that ‘what happened at Ledzokuku was so unfortunate, it should not have happened, that is why we are appealing that the Minister in-charge should collaborate.’

He was emphatic Nana Oye must be talked to by the President because the NDC party did not appoint her as minister.

Mr. Nukpenu accused Ade Coker of abandoning a press conference he (Mr. Coker) had initially accepted to be part of.

He underscored that ‘the Regional Chairman was aware of the press conference; it is so unfortunate the stance he has taken all over, if he continues that way, he is shooting himself in the foot.’

Mr. Nukpenu said Mr. Coker must take bold and sincere decisions, stressing that he could not countenance what was going on.

‘I am just calling on him to be principled and pull the breaks on the things that will affect the rank and file of the party and not to jump into any position to shield (anybody), he charged.’

Ade Coker Explains
Mr. Coker explained that he withdrew from the supposed press conference because of information he gathered, prompting him to inform the organizers to call off the press conference.

‘Information had gone out to stop the press conference, period! If you also respect authority, you will not go ahead and do it,’ he noted.

Mr. Coker stated that Nana Oye would on Tuesday attend a regional meeting to ‘tell us what the situation on the ground is’

‘You cannot make a statement to malign the woman when you have not listened to her side of the story; that is not principleNobody is afraid to say the things that need to be said,’ the NDC Greater Accra Regional Chairman asserted.

Roaming Charges
Meanwhile, as at 12:21pm on Friday when Nana Oye was contacted for comments, she declined, indicating that she was in London and could not speak to the issues because of expensive roaming charges.
