Single and in in-form: Rory McIlroy full of confidence heading to Ohio

The Northern Irishman, 25, took out the BMW PGA Championship, just days after ending his relationship with Danish tennis star Caroline Wozniacki.

McIlroy said he was excited by his form ahead of the PGA Tour event at Muirfield, and the US Open starting June 12.

“It is good to be here coming off the back of a win last week. My game feels in really good shape, it has felt in good shape for the last few months,” he said.

“It was really nice to get that win at the weekend. It gives me some confidence coming into here and obviously the US Open in a couple of weeks’ time.”

McIlroy’s win on Sunday was his first of the year after he had gone close on multiple occasions to start 2014.

The two-time major winner said poor runs during tournaments had been costing him.

“For me it’s been a stretch of nine holes at some point during the tournament where I have shot four- or five-over par and at the end of the week I have lost by two or three,” McIlroy said.

“It happened more than once at Sawgrass. I didn’t get off to very good starts on the front line, it happened at Quail Hollow as well. I had three really bad Fridays in a row – Masters, Quail Hollow and TPC. So it really held me back.

“I didn’t really have any of those stretches last week. OK, I played the front nine in three-over par on Friday but it was in tough conditions.

“And I came back to shoot one-under par so it’s being able to manage your game when you are not in total control of it and you can turn those 74s and 75s into 71s, it makes a lot of difference.”
