MLS: Chivas USA 0 Portland Timbers 2

Adi scored twice in the space of six minutes deep into the second half as the Timbers emerged triumphant over a Chivas side who finished with 10 men in front of just 3,702 spectators at StubHub Center in California.

Back-to-back wins for Portland extended their unbeaten streak to six games and saw them climb up to sixth in the Western Conference, 10 points adrift of leaders the Seattle Sounders, while Chivas remain at the foot of the table.

Having come from behind to beat New York Red Bulls last week, the Timbers were understandably confident, though they were up against a Chivas team who had collected four points from six games.

Chances were few and far between during the opening 45 minutes, however, with both teams struggling to create any clear-cut opportunities.

Chivas had the best chance of the half but Eric Avila sent his 35th-minute shot over the bar from close range.

After a goalless first half, the Timbers finally made the breakthrough courtesy of Adi in the 65th minute.

The Nigerian striker, on loan from Danish club Copenhagen, found himself unmarked in the penalty area before latching on to Jorge Villafana’s cross for his first goal in Portland colours.

Adi added to his tally six minutes later, when he rounded Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy.

Chivas’ woes were compounded six minutes from time after defender Bobby Burling saw red for a late challenge on Adi.
