Govt Hasn’t Dump Zongos – NDC Caucus

The Zongo Caucus of the National Democratic Congress says Zongo communities across the country are still committed to voting the ruling party in any election base on the valuable developments it has brought to them.

According to the NDC group, unlike the opposition New Patriotic Party that used Muslims during elections and dumped them after it has won, the NDC has demonstrated that it has the development of the Zongos at heart.

As a sign of showing appreciation to the valuable developmental projects it has brought to them, the group said they will continue to vote for the NDC in any election.

In a press statement signed by its National Coordinator, Alhaji Yussif Captain, the group, in a response to a May 15, 2014 publication of The aL-hAJJ, which among others revealed how the newly elected NPP Chairman Paul Afoko was making strong incursions into the Zongos, stated that “we wish to state that the Zongo communities are still committed to the NDC based on its achievements in the Zongos.”

Outlining some of the NDC’s achievements and projects in the Zongos, the statement noted that Islamic Education Units across the country were established under NDC governments, Muslims have been given two public holidays; Eid-Fitrand Eid-Adha, scholarships to 25 Muslim girls to study Gynaecology in Cuba and scholarship packages for brilliant but needy children in the Zongos among others.

“Throughout the eight years of NPP, even when they had a Zongo man as vice president, no Zongo community saw development, and again we can authoritatively say that the massive projects initiated by the NDC government were abandoned by the NPP when it took power in 2001,” the statement added.

Drawing comparison between the NDC and NPP in the yearly pilgrimage to Mecca, the group averred that the ruling party has better records in terms of the organization of Hajj than the biggest opposition party.

“Hajj has been better managed by the NDC government with the provision of Hajj village, and better arrangements have been put in place for a flexible airlifting of our colleague pilgrims to Mecca and back to Ghana,” the group noted.

Denying that the present NDC government has relented on the promises it made during the 2012 elections to the Zongo communities, the Zongo Caucus stated “indeed, if there is any political party that has used and dumped the good people of the Zongos, it is the NPP who used the late Aliu Mahama and dumped him.”

“Though we the people of the Zongos admit there are challenges confronting the nation when the President has also admitted, we wish to assure our brothers and sisters in the Zongos that steps are been taken to address them,” the statement assured.

To streamline information flow, the group has named its Communication Team made up of Imam Mohammed, Ollabode Williams, Alhaji Mutawakil, Ramzy Mohammed, Baba Alhaji, Isso Nyina and Ahmed Gedel.
