Alan Boys Attack Nana

Alan Kwadwo Kyeremate
A group that is supposedly championing the cause of twice-defeated flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen to be elected as standard bearer of the party ahead of the 2016 general elections, has thrown caution to the wind and attacked the 2012 presidential candidate of the party, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

The group, ‘Get Alan Kyerematen Elected (GAKE), with its motto: ‘One More Change For Power,’ and ‘Stop the Mills, Nana Addo Comparison Once’ as its slogan, said Nana Akufo-Addo is a spent force and therefore the party delegates should look for a new face in the person of Mr. Kyerematen, aka Alan Cash.

‘How can a 72-year-old Nana Addo overturn 323,663 votes of 57-year-old John Mahama, who doubles as an incumbent president? If Nana Addo had something positive for the NPP, he could have done so in both the 2008 and 2012 general elections. It is thus imperative for the NPP delegates to replace Nana Addo with Alan Kyerematen in the upcoming NPP Congress.

‘It is the belief of GAKE that Alan, who is the last John to complete the ‘John hierarchy’ in the 4th Republic – after John Rawlings, John Kufuor, John Mills, and John Mahama – has all the qualities that Ghanaian voters are looking for – charisma, competence, humility, gentility, appeal, calmness and peace,’ Katakyie Kwame Opoku Agyemang, National Coordinator of GAKE, stated in a statement posted on the internet.

It is not clear whether Mr. Kyerematen has endorsed the language of the group, as the GAKE National Coordinator conceded that ‘it is the vehicle for Alan’s campaign.”

He said they were recruiting more people into their fold.

Argument
Katakyie Kwame Opoku Agyemang
Katakyie Agyemang’s argued that Nana Addo had failed to win the power that he promised to deliver to the NPP on the two occasions that he was given the opportunity to lead the party.

Speaking on Accra-based Adom FM’s Morning Show programme yesterday, Okatakyie Opoku Agyemang questioned Nana Addo’s ability to win the 2016 general elections, calling Nana a failure.

Logic
He wondered why some members of the NPP continued to root for Nana Addo to be given a third chance to lead the party simply because he could get sympathy votes like the late President Mills.

Touching on the 2012 general elections, Okatakyie said Nana Akufo-Addo hid behind the cloak of alleged rigging with intent to seek re-election in the upcoming primary, stressing the need for delegates of the party to vote him out.

He, however, said that ‘rigging is part of the game.’

He posited that the previous NPP congress that returned Nana Addo as NPP Presidential Candidate was manipulated.

Doubt
Okatakyie’s analysis sometimes made the host of the programme, Captain Smart, to question his (Okatakyie’s) logic since he (host) struggled to make meaning out of it.

In one of such instances, he was compelled to ask the Alan boy why he thought Alan, who had lost two successive internal primaries to Nana Addo, would be a better choice for the NPP – since he (Alan) had equally not been able to sustain the votes he secured in those two electoral exercises.

Captain Smart recalled that Alan’s vote depreciated from the 32.67 per cent he secured during the 2007 flagbearership contest of the NPP at the University of Ghana, Legon to a little over 19 per cent in the 2010 primary.

But the GAKE Coordinator would not take that for a reason to elect Nana Addo as the NPP flagbearer.

According to him, the two were entirely different scenarios, adding that one was an internal party contest and the other national elections involving about five million NPP supporters.

Apparently bugged down by Okatakyie’s analysis, the host ended the programme on the note, ‘NPP, you got to be careful.’

Fire For fire
Hours later, another group calling itself ‘Youth Movement for Nana Addo’ (YMFNA), claiming to be a coalition of NPP youth  professionals, who believe in the ideals of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, also issued a counter statement expressing utter shock and disgust at the attacks on their mentor.

The statement, which was signed by one Ronald Hemans, Head of Operations of the group, criticized Okatakyie’s group for making disparaging remarks about Nana Akufo-Addo.

Reproach
YMFNA noted that ‘it is increasingly becoming clear that the sole agenda of GAKE is to attack and destroy Akufo-Addo’s person which is certainly alien to our party, and called on Mr. Kyerematen to call his boys to order.

Friendly Advice
The group stressed their belief in competition in an atmosphere of respect and decorum and not vicious personality attacks.
