Youth Seek Acclamation For Nana

The Greater Accra Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has asked the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) to cancel the upcoming presidential primaries and unanimously declare Nana Akufo-Addo as flagbearer for the 2016 elections.

Going through another congress to elect a flagbearer to lead the party in 2016 will be a waste of time and resources, according to them.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) recently held a NEC meeting with a resolution to go for an early congress to elect a flagbearer for the crucial 2016 general elections.

This, according to NEC, will give the party’s flagbearer ample time to embark on an effective campaign ahead of the 2016 general elections.

However, the youth wing stated that “we will work to stop any contest of presidential candidates and present only one candidate, whom the party and people want.”

Bernard Owusu, Greater Accra NPP youth Communication Officer, who addressed the press conference in Accra yesterday, said the party could use the funds for the congress to support one candidate (Nana Addo) to recapture power from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).”

He said the numerous competitions were creating acrimony and disunity among the rank and file of the party.

Mr. Owusu said, “We, the youth in NPP, believe that this is the time for our leaders to go round the country to visit constituencies, sit at a roundtable to assess the structures of the party, and take necessary steps to strengthen them.

“This is definitely not the time to start preparing for another internal election. We don’t have that luxury.”

He said the level of poverty and disenchantment, especially among the youth, was perilous, noting “this time we want to see our leaders channel their energies into addressing a cohesive direction for us, and not fighting themselves.

“As major stakeholders in our party and country, we, the wing and concerned youth, representing the interest of all youth in Ghana, are prepared to resist anybody who works or acts against our interests.

“We will fight persons who have amassed wealth through their contacts from NDC, and want to use such wealth to deny our party victory in 2016 by engaging in disingenuous activities with the sole aim of destabilizing the NPP.”

He called on the party’s newly-elected national and regional youth organizers to work hard to hold a congress to acclaim Nana Addo.

Mr. Owusu also called on former President Kufuor to use his influence in the party to call the likes of Alan Kyeremanteng, Asamoah Boateng, Osei Ameyaw, among others, to order to permit the acclamation of Nana Addo.
