Rory McIlroy climbs rankings after BMW PGA Championship win

The Northern Irishman – a former world number one – shot a six-under-par 66 in his final round at Wentworth to secure a one-shot victory over Shane Lowry.

McIlory’s victory ended an 18-month wait for a tournament win, with his last coming at the DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.

He has duly moved above Jason Day, Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose and Jordan Spieth in the latest standings, which were released on Monday.

Lowry was also a big mover after his superb display at Wentworth, the Irishman climbing 68 places to world number 74.

Adam Scott retained top spot, and Henrik Stenson replaced Tiger Woods in second place.

Scott beat Jason Dufner in a play-off at the Crowne Plaza Invitational on Sunday to strengthen his lead at number one, while Dufner moves back into the top 20 after his display in Fort Worth.
