Essien Salutes Real Madrid…On Champions League Win

Ghana international Michael Essien has hailed Real Madrid for securing a historic 10th European title.

Los Blancos came from behind in a gripping 4-1 win over Atletico Madrid in Lisbon on Saturday to win the 2014 Uefa Champions League title.

Essien, who spent the 2012-13 season on loan at Santiago Bernabeu, patted his former team-mates on the back for a well-fought battle.

‘Congratulations to Real Madrid for winning their 10th Champions League trophy, what a game though, great final #halamadrid,’ the former Chelsea star tweeted immediately after the final.

Diego Godin capitalised on an outrageous howler from goalkeeper Iker Casillas to head home shortly before the end of the first half, but Sergio Ramos equalised through a powerful header in the dying minutes of normal time to keep Madrid’s Decima dream alive.

With about 10 minutes left to end extra time Gareth Bale headed into the top corner after Angel Di Maria’s shot was saved by Thibaut Courtois before Marcelo buried a late left-footed strike and Cristiano Ronaldo scored a penalty to seal Madrid’s first Champions League trophy since 2002.

That was Ronaldo’s second Champions League title and Madrid’s 10th European diadem.
