History made: Puig wins Puerto Rico’s maiden WTA title

Puig, who got the better of Madison Keys in the semi-final, came into the final without having dropping a single set and she was dominant again on the clay, winning 6-4 6-3.

Spain’s Soler-Espinosa generally offered little resistance to Puig, proving to be particularly unimpressive against the Puerto Rican’s serve.

Soler-Espinosa got off to a dreadful start, losing on her serve in the match’s very first game and Puig was solid for the remainder of the set, seeing it out 6-4.

The Spaniard remained in touch with Puig until the fifth game of the second set when she went 3-2 down, allowing the 20-year-old to go on and claim three of the last four games to win not only her first WTA title.

“It’s amazing to do this coming from such a small island, where tennis isn’t necessarily recognized as one of the main sports,” she said.

“I’m just happy I’m able to be here playing tennis not only for myself, but for my country too.

“I woke up this morning and I felt it. I felt I was going to do something amazing.

“It was one of those feelings where you just know it’s going to happen, and I played some of the greatest tennis I’ve ever played.”

Up next for Puig is a trip to Roland Garros for the French Open, where she has been dealt a tough first-round match against 2010 finalist Sam Stosur, while Soler-Espinosa faces Chanelle Scheepers.
