A scrap dealer alleged to have entered and stolen from the rooms of soldiers at the 48 Engineers barracks, in Accra, has been busted by the Teshie Police.
The 21-year old man, Basshiru Ibrahim, was arrested by soldiers at the barracks and handed over to the police.
The police said he had amulets around his waist and hands which were supposedly worn to protect him from being arrested.
The Teshie District Police Commander, Superintendent of Police, Mr Simon Agbodeka, said Ibrahim at about 2pm on May 13, 2014 broke into the rooms of two soldiers at the barracks and made away with various items valued at GH¢3,820.
According to him, when the suspect entered the room of one of the soldiers, he stole items worth GH¢2,520.
The items comprised an HP laptop valued at GH¢1,300, two Techno mobile phones which cost GH¢240, a GH¢900 Sumsumg phone and Nokia phone valued at GH¢80.
He said the suspect proceeded to Block H at the barracks and forcibly entered a room where the son of a soldier on peace keeping mission lived.
Upon entry, the Teshie Commander said the suspect took items amounting to GH¢380.
The stollen items from the second room were a school bag valued at GH¢20, and two mobile phones that cost GH¢360.
A resident was said to have raised an alarm following which the suspect run into a bush nearby.
‘But luck eluded him and he was arrested by some military officers on duty at the barracks who handed him over to the Police,’ said Mr Agbodeka.
He said a search conducted on the suspect lead to the retrieval of all the stolen items.
During interrogation, the suspect is said to have admitted the offence and has since been charged with unlawful entry and stealing.
