P. V. Obeng shaped my political career —Veep

The Vice-President, Mr Paa Kwesi Bekoe Amissah-Arthur, has paid glowing tribute to the late P.V. Obeng. He says Mr Obeng played a tremendous role in shaping his political career especially as he was the one who introduced him to the PNDC government in 1983 and from the day he became the Vice-President, the astute politician consistently advised him, which went a long way to enrich his delivery.

Mr Amissah-Arthur and his wife, Matilda, were at the Tema Community Two residence of the late senior presidential advisor yesterday to sympathise with his widow, Rose, the children and bereaved family.

He described Mr Obeng as “a senior brother and friend” and said when he became the Vice-President, Mr Obeng, who was also the Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission, pledged to help him to succeed, and he never reneged on his pledge.

He also said one of the things he would remember Mr Obeng for was the emails he consistently sent him in the mornings, advising him on many important issues. Role in National Economic Forum

Turning to the just-ended National Economic Forum, Mr Amissah-Arthur said Mr Obeng was instrumental in organising the programme and also contributed significantly to its success.

According to the Vice-President, about a month ago when he informed Mr Obeng about the forum, he readily supported it and during the three-day programme, Mr Obeng was at his workaholic best, handling the group that dealt with post-forum developments.

He indicated that he was shocked when he heard about Mr Obeng’s death last Saturday, considering the abundant strength he exhibited at the forum. Service with distinction

Mr Amissah-Arthur thanked God and the bereaved family for giving the nation such a fine personality who served the nation with distinction. He said Ghana would always remember and celebrate the politician and statesman for serving his country without blemish.

Mr Amissah-Arthur signed the book of condolence at the residence.

One-week observance
The one-week observance, according to the family, would be held at the Community Two Catholic Church on Saturday, where the date for the burial and final funeral rites would be announced.
