Akuapem Presby to build new churches

The Akuapem Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana is to construct a total of 60  pavilion type church building for all the deprived communities within its catchment area.

The Presbytery Chairperson of the Akuapem Presbytery, Rev. George Opare Kwapong, disclosed this at the end of this year’s Presbytery conference at Adukrom in the Eastern Region.

He said the construction of the church buildings for  the deprived communities had become necessary to give church members decent places to worship.

He said despite the rich heritage of the Presbyterian church of Ghana in the Akuapem area, the church was losing grounds and becoming unattractive in some  towns and villages in it’s catchment area.

Rev. Kwapong said people preferred to be members of other denominations though they wanted to have their names in the roll of the Presbyterian Church for ceremonial purposes.

He said a survey to find out why people were not leaving the  churches revealed that most people did  not find the church buildings and its environment attractive.

‘It was against this background that the Presbytery Council decided to construct church buildings for such communities in order to get decent places to worship, and also make the church more attractive to the people, especially the youth’, he added.

Rev. Kwapong said the move was part of activities to rebrand and rejuvenate enthusiasm in church and church activities across the Presbytery.

He said the Presbytery had decided to build 60 pavilion churches  within the next two years and therefore  appealed to individuals, non-governmental organisations, companies and philanthropists to come to the aid of the Presbytery to achieve its objective.

In a sermon, Rev. Dr Godwin Nii Noi Odonkor, Ga Presbytery Chairperson of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, urged Christians, to learn from Jesus Christ and be humble at all times.

He said people in authority should not lord over their subjects, but provide quality leadership at all times to make the country a better place.
