Gov’t Neglecting Ashanti

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) government has been accused of deliberating ignoring the developmental needs of the people of the Ashanti region because it is the stronghold of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The NPP Member of Parliament (MP) for Kwabre East, Kofi Frimpong, who made the accusation in a chat with DAILY GUIDE, said that MPs from the region have consistently drawn the attention of the government to the deplorable roads in the region and the debilitating effect of the National Health Insurance Scheme Capitation being operated in the region.

He noted that the deplorable roads in his constituency prompted residents of Kenyase and Antoa to embark on demonstration about three months ago yet the government had failed to do something about the roads.

‘Roads in Kwabre East are the worst in the country and when my people demonstrate to draw government’s attention to the bad roads in the area which is seriously affecting socio-economic life in the area, the regional coordinating council orders police to brutalise my people,’ he said, adding that a probe into police brutalities against innocent people in his constituency had also not yielded any result.

According to the Kwabre East MP, the road from Kumasi through Kenyase and Antoa to Asonomanso, which is about 7km had deteriorated to the extent that it takes passengers more than one hour to use that road.

‘What have we done at all that this small road, which leads to a popular shrine like Antoa, which also serves as popular tourist centre cannot be constructed for us,’ he queried.

He alleged that when President Mahama recently visited the Ashanti region, he sneaked into Kenyase to visit a poultry farm in the area and that he used a different route because he knew the main road was in terrible state.

‘We learnt of the president’s presence there and the chiefs of the area are angry that he did not even inform them that he was coming to their traditional area.’

He said it was unfortunate for the president to tell his NDC members that the residents of Kumasi were unappreciative of the work  done by the NDC government.

‘I don’t believe the president meant what he said otherwise we would be tempted to say that then it is indeed deliberate for the government to deny the people of the Ashanti region their share of the national cake because they will never appreciate anything the NDC government does for them.’

He therefore called on the government to fulfill its promises to the people of the Ashanti region.
