Goalkeeper wahala: Soccer Africa crew weep for Ghana

Coach Kwesi Appiah’s 26-man provisional World Cup squad has received rave reviews from some of Africa’s leading journalists on Supersport’s Soccer Africa programme on DSTV but the inclusion of Orlando Pirates goalkeeper , Fatau Dauda has got them questioning if all is well with the Black Stars.

Dauda has remained virtually inactive the whole of the just ended season making just two full and one substitute appearances in the four competitions Orlando Pirates featured in 2013/14, totaling a playing time of 202 minutes.

In fact, last Saturday in the Nedbank Cup final, Dauda did not even make the bench and was in suit as Pirates beat Bidvest Vits to claim the Cup for the first time since 2011.

‘A goalkeeper who has not played the whole season and we have been wondering during commentaries if he will be selected by Ghana,’ host Sizwe Mabena began the Ghana goalkeeper debate.

‘There is no doubt that Ghana have goalkeeping problems. It happens sometimes, the reality is you have to face it. Ghana don’t have goalkeepers so Dauda has to thank his stars,’ renowned African football expert Mark Gleeson responded.

‘The other keepers are Adam Kwarasey who has just started his season, you know the Norwegian league has just kicked off. The 3rd keeper Stephen Adams is based in the local league with his only exposure being the CHAN and 4th choice, Daniel Agyei of Free State Stars has just recovered from hernia operation,’ Gleeson explained.

Apart from the man between the sticks however, the Soccer Africa crew were in no doubt about the quality of the side assembled by Coach Appiah.

‘Of all the teams including Nigeria, believe you me they have the best team in Africa,’ Idah Peterside said.

Award winning SA journo, Thomas Kwenaite alias TK added: ‘This is a very strong team and I have no doubt that of all the African teams, Ghana will go furthest.’
