Police ‘shocked’ by ruthless action of highway robbers

The Ashanti Regional Police Commander, DCOP Nathan Kofi Boakye is leading a team of officers to the robbery scene where a cargo truck driver was shot dead on the Kumasi-Accra Highway.

The attack which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday left two others wounded.

DCOP Boakye, in the company of personnel of the criminal investigation department will get first hand information on the robbery incident which happened inside a forest area.

About six armed men on Wednesday at about 1:32 a.m  shot sporadically at vehicles plying the Kumasi-Accra road in the middle of forest killing an unidentified driver instantly.

Police is surprised at the manner in which the robbers carried out their operations.

The driver of that cargo truck despite complying to an order by the robbers to stop was shot on the forehead through the window before going ahead to open fire on passengers on a ‘VIP’ bus.

Juaso District Commander, DSP Samuel Laterbu told Nhyira Fm ‘he was surprised at the robbers’.

‘Unfortunately for the driver, he was the first person to emerge. He stopped alright but I don’t know what happened. They shot him through the window at the forehead’. DSP Laterbu noted.

Some colleague drivers who offered to assist the victim were caught up by the robbers, robbing them in the process after ‘making them lie flat on the ground’.

The armed men poised for action stopped an Accra bound VIP bus and attacked passengers.

The driver, afraid of the robbers had doors of his bus locked after which he and his mate sneaked to join the other passengers.

What baffles police is the callous nature of the robbery operations.

‘They wanted to open the door; they could not. By then the driver sensing danger off the engine and crawled inside the bus to the real likewise his mate.  They shot through the door and they were able to open the door. They entered and searched all the passengers’ onboard VIP bus, took their laptops, mobile phones and monies on them’. DSP Laterbu explained.
