Mission Impossible? Lions aim to keep title dreams alive

Heart of Lions are in with a shot at this season’s First Capital Plus Premier League title. That is a statement that is weird in many ways, given Kotoko’s run-away form at the top at a point looked unasailable.

But A last gap Prince Acquah goal handed coach Yusif Abubakar’s side a narrow home victory over Medeama on Sunday, a win that could prove crucial to their slim title hopes.

Now seven points adrift of leaders Kotoko, the Kpando-based side are aware that with three games to go, just three points for Kotoko would effectively be the end of their dreams. But will Kotoko win?

The Porcupine Warriors could wrap up the title on Wednesday when they face New Edubiase United in Bekwai, but there’s a huge possibility that they won’t.

Why? Kotoko have a bad history away in Bekwai: they have never won at Edubiase, and that should give Lions some confidence as they go into their own fixture against Amidaus Professionals.

Tema-based Amidaus are yet to beat Lions in a competitive league fixture, with two of their three meetings so far ending in draws whilst the other – their most recent clash in Kpando – ended in a win for Lions.

With New Edubiase President Yakubu Abdul Salam promising a win over Kotoko “at all costs”, building the pressure on the league leaders for a possible slip,  a Lions win in Tema on Wednesday could close the gap to four points if Kotoko lose, a situation that could signal a dramatic end to the season.

Will Kotoko wrap up their 23rd league title against all odds in Bekwai? Or will Wednesday become known in future as the day Lions, once as much as 13 points adrift, blew the title race wide open?

Meanwhile, the relegation battle will continue on Wednesday. As many as 13 teams are involved. 13. This could turn out to be one of the most competitive endings to a GPL season.
