Silently in-charge: Coach Appiah insists Black Stars will train with 26

By Prince Dornu-Leiku
The Black Stars coach has named Mahatma Otoo, goalkeeper Razak Braimah, Rahman Chibsah and locally based Kwabena Edusei on a stand-by list but Kwesi Appiah insists the national team will begin preparations on Tuesday with the original 26 named last week.

The four stand-by players were named in addition the 26 declared by the Ghana coach on May 12 to meet FIFA’s demand that all 32 national teams provide a 30-man list ahead of naming the final 23 in early June.

And according to the former national team captain, he was forced to add the four names to meet the requirements of the world football ruling body but it does not mean he is also under obligation to use them as Ghana commences training for the big soccer fiesta.

‘The same applies to every country, not just Ghana but I can tell you that the team will start training with the 26 players I chose. FIFA have no control over that,’ Kwesi Appiah told the media at the SWAG Awards last Saturday.

The coach is also appealing to Ghanaians to offer full support to the team as they set off on the journey to make the country proud in Brazil.

‘The players need every prayer behind them to do well. What we have to do now is to concentrate on what we already have. I case of any injury or problem, we can always bring others in,’ he explained.
