No dates known: ‘No timetable’ for Tiger Woods’ return

The American 14-time major winner last appeared on the PGA Tour at the WGC-Cadillac Championship in March, where he finished tied for 25th.

He since had corrective surgery on a pinched nerve in his back, but is yet to return to the tour – consequently seeing him lose his top ranking to Australia’s Adam Scott.

Woods missed the Masters at Augusta for the first time since his 1995 debut, and is in severe doubt to line-up at the US Open in June after admitting he is not back in full training yet.

“There really is no timetable,” Woods said on Monday from the Congressional Country Club, where he was promoting June’s Quicken Loans National – a tournament that aids his foundation.

“I think that’s been kind of the realisation to all of this, is that there’s no date.

“It’s just take it on a daily basis. It’s not going to be up to me whether I play or not, it’s going to be up to my docs. I want to play now. It would be nice to be able to go out there today and play.”

Woods said he missed the enjoyment of strolling the golf course, and he has not been able to pull the driver out of the bag.

“I miss playing. I miss being out there on the golf course and doing that,” Woods said.

“I miss getting out there and hitting balls like that and just playing. I miss the game.

“Forget about competing at the highest levels, I just miss being out there and just being around the golf course.

“As of right now, I can chip and putt, but that’s it.

“We are going to just take it slowly, and I don’t know how many more weeks I’m going to be at this pace, but at least I have something, so I’m able to actually get out there and chip and putt.

“But as far as full swings and that timetable about playing, I don’t know.”

The US Open begins on June 12 at Pinehurst, while the British Open begins July 17 at Royal Liverpool – with Woods in danger of missing both the mid-year majors as he did in 2011 due to knee and Achilles tendon problems.

Former world number two Colin Montgomerie said he believes Woods has lost his ‘fear factor’ but said the American would return to the tour chasing his top ranking.

“He will come back, he’ll come back, he will, and he will be determined,” Montgomerie said.

“He’s about to lose his number one spot this week and he’ll be determined to get that back as he was before when he slipped outside the top 50 I believe when he was injured in 2008.”
