Media reports on Monday suggested the national team captain had turned down offers to underperform in matches, after his testimony to the anti-corruption unit of the International Cricket Council (ICC) was leaked.
NZC have reacted angrily, slamming the fact McCullum’s statement has become public knowledge.
“New Zealand Cricket is dismayed that Brendon McCullum’s testimony to the International Cricket Council has been leaked to the media,” read a statement.
“We can confirm that Brendon is NOT under investigation by the ICC and his testimony has actually been applauded by them.
“NZC has 100 per cent confidence in our captain and his role in tackling corruption.”
New Zealand Cricket Players’ Association chief executive Heath Mills echoed those comments, adding: “It is unacceptable that written statements made by players to the ICC ACSU (Anti-Corruption and Security Unit) investigation have found their way into the public domain.
“This completely undermines any trust or confidence players may have in cricket’s anti-corruption systems and processes given confidentiality is supposed to be central to this process.
“We want to know why this has happened and what protections have been placed around the handling of these statements to ensure they remain confidential.
“Corruption is the biggest issue facing sport. Whilst it is devastating to have these investigations occurring at the moment in New Zealand, we must recognise the problem and do our best to ensure it can be eliminated as best we can moving forward. To that end, a well-resourced and independent anti-corruption unit is essential.
“Placing these player statements into the public domain does nothing to help the fight against corruption and certainly does nothing to encourage players who have information to come forward with any degree of confidence that the game will protect them.”
