Atlanta Braves down Milwaukee Brewers

East pace-setters Atlanta opened up a 1.5-game buffer at the helm, courtesy of their success, combined with the Washington Nationals’ extra-innings loss to the Cincinnati Reds.

The Brewers, though, maintain a 3.5-game lead on closest rivals the St Louis Cardinals in the NL’s Central division.

Atlanta put on a homer clinic, with each of Freddie Freeman, Ryan Doumit, Justin Upton and Ryan Braun clearing the fence.

Braves starter Mike Minor pitched for just under seven innings, allowing just two earned runs while striking out five.

The Nationals forced extra innings against the Reds at the bottom of the ninth, when Scott Hairston’s one-out sacrifice-fly scored Danny Espinosa.

Neither side troubled the scorers until the 15th inning, when Todd Frazier’s two-run homer proved decisive for the Reds.

The Nationals pulled one run back at the bottom of the inning but could not prolong the contest further.

The Detroit Tigers’ remarkable road streak finally came to an end, at the hands of the plucky Cleveland Indians.

Michael Brantley’s walk-off homer ended Detroit’s 11-match winning run in away matches, and also ended Detroit’s six-match winning streak.

The result – sealed when Brantley’s full-count hit in the 10th inning rocketed into the stands – was the Indians’ first win in five matches.

The Chicago White Sox reeled in the Kansas City Royals for a 7-6 victory, after conceding five runs in the first inning.

The Royals hit the lead when Paul Konerko struck a two-run homer in the fifth to complete the comeback.

The result meant the Royals gained no ground on the National League’s Central division-leading Tigers, who hold a seven-game buffer at the top.

AL West cellar-dwellers the Houston Astros chalked up their third win in succession, beating the Los Angeles Angels 5-2.

The Astros remain 11.5 games behind division leaders the Oakland Athletics.
