The Royals hit the lead when Paul Konerko struck a two-run homer in the fifth to complete the comeback.
The result meant the Royals gained no ground on the National League’s Central division-leading Tigers, who hold a seven-game buffer at the top.
AL West cellar-dwellers the Houston Astros chalked up their third win in succession, beating the Los Angeles Angels 5-2.
The Astros remain 11.5 games behind division leaders the Oakland Athletics.
