Kwesi Appiah wins Sports Writers’ top award

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah will enter the World Cup with the desire to top up his awards list after he was named by the Sports Writers Association of Ghana as the 2013 Personality of the Year.

Appiah collected the flagship award ahead of his captain, Asamoah Gyan with weightlifter Juliana Arkoh coming third at a ceremony in Accra on Saturday night.

He was also named named Coach of the Year.
The night, attended by Ghana Football Association President Kwesi Nyantakyi, who was presented with a Special Award saw the Black Satellites, bronze medalist at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in 2013 handed the National Team of the Year prize.

Black Stars captain Gyan beat off competition from Kwadwo Asamoah and Sulley Ali Muntari to win the Men’s Footballer of the Year.

Ebenezer Assifuah, who top-scored for Ghana at the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup with six goals to win the Golden Shoe was named Most Promising Star while national teammate, Clifford Aboagye, Bronze Shoe winner at the U-20 World Cup picked the Discovery of the Year.

Black Maidens attacker Jane Ayieyam was crowned Female Football of the Year.

Hasaacas Ladies were voted Best Female Club of the Year.

AshantiGold Chief Executive Kudjoe Fianoo, former Kotoko Board member Kennedy Adjapong and Nuru Bremansu received Special Awards for their contributions towards accelerated development of sports in the country.
