Ashanti Police ‘demoralised’ over easy bail of armed robbers, hardened criminals

The Ashanti Regional Police Command has expressed worry at the manner armed robbers and other hardened criminals are being granted bail by courts in the region.

The command is particularly concerned about the soft bail conditions given to suspected hardened criminals and has therefore filed a formal complaint to the Supervising High Court Judge in Kumasi.

Regional Crime Officer, Chief Superintendent Peter Baba, says as many as 52 robbers arrested over the past two months, have been granted bail, sometimes for non-bailable charges.

Regional Commander, DCOP Nathan Kofi Boakye and his men say they are “shocked” by incessant news of bailouts granted to robbers, forcing the command to officially protest.

“We just started experiencing this type of shocked news and the police administration in the region is not happy with it”, the Crime Commander revealed.

According to Chief Superintendent Baba, there are instances where facts of cases are not read, neither are pleas of accused taken but judges grant bail to suspects.

There are instances, also, where police have protested bail granted some criminals who failed to sign their bail bonds, Chief Superintendent Baba revealed.

Some police investigators have been cited for contempt for disrespecting the court’s orders.

For example, a police investigator has been cited for contempt of court for refusing to sign a bail granted  two accused robbers, because he found that to be wrong and improper.

The officer took that position because the facts of the case were neither read in court nor the pleas of the accused taken.

Two people,  Isaac Asare and Emmanuel Asamoah,  who  were  arrested in connection with a robbery incident at Fowoade in the Kwabre East District were granted GH¢ 10,000.00 bail with a surety each when arraigned to make their next court appearance on May 30.

Chief Superintendent Baba told Nhyira FM’s Ohemeng Tawiah the police administration has lodged a complaint with the Supervising High Court Judge and the Chief State Attorney in Kumasi, with a meeting over the matter scheduled for Thursday afternoon.

“Police has taken those measures; risking our lives to get them arrested. These people are sent to the court to be reminded whilst some investigations go on. You know sometimes the court thinks that we are only coming to remand the people and then go and relax. Now these people are granted bail by the court and if he’s granted bail, he’s gone and where are you going to get his accomplices”, Chief Superintendent Baba quizzed.
