2014 World Cup: Ghana coach fires warning top players over final 23-man squad

Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah has warned there there are no automatic places in his final 23-man World Cup squad insisting that only those who impress during their pre-tournament camping will make the trip.

Appiah unveiled a strong 26-man squad for next month’s tournament in Brazil to prepare for the competition with several top names in it as well as some youngsters.

This has sparked hopes within some quarters that players like Michael Essien, Asamoah Gyan, Kevin Prince Boateng, Sulley Muntari and Kwadwo Asamoah are automatic choices in the final squad.

However, Appiah insists he will use their two friendly matches against Holland and South Korea as well as the training sessions during the pre-tournament camp to decide who will make the final squad.

“None of the players have got a visa to Brazil. I have named 26 players and we believe that they are all competent,” coach Appiah warned his players.

“That is why we will have training sessions here in Ghana on the 20th before flying to play Holland and then to the US for the South Korea match.

“I cannot tell who will miss out at this moment. We have to travel to Holland and the USA and go through all those days before making a decision. When all that is done, then I will be able to tell who will go to Brazil.”

Ghana will play Holland on the May 31 in Rotterdam and South Korea on June 9, 2014 in Miami.
